Metal sculpture and psychology may be unlikely dual majors, but they gave Amanda a way to combine her creativity and interest in how people make sense of the world. In addition to her knowledge of welding, she comes to Mad*Pow with a Masters in Human Factors from Bentley University. As a researcher, Amanda looks for ways to collaborate with designers to create something functional, beautiful, and backed up by strong research.
Amanda is passionate about making people’s lives better and safer. She put that passion into practice as a human factors researcher at the U.S. Department of Transportation, where she designed tests and performed safety evaluations for drivers, pilots, and air traffic controllers. Amanda counts her biggest achievement as winning the grand prize in web VR at the MIT Reality Virtually Hackathon. She designed an app that gives displaced children in a refugee camp a safe, virtual way to experience a new culture.
Amanda’s wide-ranging interests don’t stop when she leaves work. She enjoys a good steak and also spends time lifting weights, decorating cakes, and going to concerts and music festivals.
